Creating Commodity Groups

In SIX ERP, Commodity Groups are used to logically categorize similar items within your warehouse and inventory structure.

By defining Commodity Groups, you create reusable categories that can be linked to inventory items. These groups ensure consistency, make item selection easier during operational processes, and are essential when working with variable product components.

What Are Commodity Groups?

Commodity Groups function as categorical containers for similar or interchangeable inventory items. They allow you to:

If your business manufactures goods, these groups are especially important for managing interchangeable components in manufacturing, enabling the use of Component Groups in BOMs, and streamlining the organization of large inventories.

Accessing Commodity Group Settings

To manage Commodity Groups navigate to Settings > Module Settings > Warehouse & Inventory Settings.
From the options tab, choose Commodity Groups.

This opens the interface where you can view, create, or edit your defined groups.

Adding a New Commodity Group

To create a new Commodity Group:

  1. Click the New Button
This will open the creation dialog.

  2. Enter data as desired
Provide a clear and descriptive Group Code and Group Name, define the display order for the group, and if desired provide a note on what items should be grouped in the group. You can define more than one Group at the same moment by entering data in new rows as needed.

  3. Click Submit
Once named, click Save to store the group in the system.

Your new Commodity Group(s) will now be available for linking to inventory items and Component Groups. You can add one or more Commodity Groups at the same time. If you add more than ten groups, the spreadsheet will expand with cursor down!

Editing a Commodity Group

To modify an existing group name:

  1. Locate the Commodity Group in the list.

  2. Click the ⋮ (vertical three-dot) menu on the right-hand side of the row.

  3. Select Edit, make your changes, and press Submit to save.

A well-structured set of Commodity Groups improves inventory traceability, simplifies reporting, and enables advanced functionality like flexible component selection in manufacturing. It's good practice to plan your categories before creating them to avoid unnecessary rework later.
